Hair Transplants at the Lam Institute for Hair Restoration
A full head of hair not only looks very attractive but also protects
the scalp from the damaging effects of the sun and additionally provides
insulation from the effects of extremely cold or warm weather.
The Evolution of Hair Transplant Techniques
The past two decades have witnessed a tremendous evolution in hair
transplant techniques, and the corn-row plugs that were prevalent in the
past have now given way to the use of follicular unit grafting.
Anatomically hair tends to
grow in discrete clusters of 1, 2, 3, and 4 hairs – known as follicular
units. However, transplantation of follicular units alone oftentimes does
not provide the visual hair density that the use of slighter larger grafts
can afford.
Hair
Transplants through the Use of Multiple Sized Hair Grafts
At the Lam Institute for Hair
Restoration, we now perform hair transplants through the use of multiple
sized grafts that help create greater hair density without compromising
the naturalness of the result. With this targeted approach to hair replacement,
we can address the full spectrum of hair loss from early frontal loss
along the hairline to more complete baldness in an effective, affordable
and quick manner. The end result is a natural, undetectable, dense hair
restoration.
We like to use multiple follicular
unit grafts (MUGs) blended with single follicular unit grafts (FUGs) to
attain the ideal balance of a natural result combined with improved visual
density, or less “see-through” effect. MUGs are used in the
central scalp to achieve hair density, which are effectively camouflaged
with a periphery of FUGs to create a natural result. In addition, the
angle (acutely low and forward) and placement (tightly interlocked and
no splaying) of each hair graft are also important criteria to enhance
both density and naturalness.
Hair Transplants Circa 2008
MUGs are very different from
the old “plugs” of yesteryear. First the plugs were considerably
larger in size, typically comprising 16 to 20 hairs per graft compared
with 5 to 10 hairs for MUGs. Secondly, plugs were designed as round punches,
leaving the scalp between plugs exposed and thereby allowing an observer
to see around each graft easily. Instead, MUGs, are linear in design and
placed very close to each other in an interlocking array so that grafts
are not noticed as individual entities but rather as a continuum of hair.
Like an artist with many sized
brushes, effectively combining FUGs with MUGs can help attain more visual
density in fewer number of transplantation sessions than with FUGs alone.
Combination grafting provides a useful alternative to standard follicular
unit grafting in properly trained hands.
