Dr. Lam Tried LaserCap — Check Out His Results!

When hair starts looking thinner, it doesn’t necessarily mean large numbers of hairs have suddenly disappeared. Individual hairs can become finer and weaker, reducing overall volume. For someone noticing these changes, the obvious question is whether anything can help strengthen the hair that is still there.

Dr. Sam Lam of the Lam Institute for Hair Restoration in Dallas recently found himself asking that question personally. At age 57, after noticing a significant amount of hair loss over the previous year, he decided to try LaserCap on himself.

Why Dr. Lam Chose LaserCap as a Monotherapy

Hair loss patients frequently use several treatments simultaneously. That may make sense as a comprehensive strategy, but it creates a problem when trying to determine which modality is most effective.

Dr. Lam wanted a clearer answer.

Rather than adding several new therapies at once, he used LaserCap as a monotherapy, meaning it was the single treatment he was testing for his recent hair changes. This allowed him to observe what happened without introducing multiple new variables at the same time.

Approximately three months later, Dr. Lam was very impressed by what he saw. He describes his hair as returning to around its previous thickness and becoming a lot stronger.

What Is LaserCap?

LaserCap is an at-home form of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) designed to support hair growth. The lightweight cap contains true laser diodes that expose the scalp to monochromatic red laser light at a specific wavelength and intensity.

Dr. Lam’s recommended protocol has traditionally involved wearing the device for 20 minutes three times per week. Because it can be used at home and concealed beneath a regular baseball cap, it also solves one of the practical problems Dr. Lam saw with earlier generations of laser therapy.

In the past, patients had to visit an office multiple times each week and sit beneath a laser device. Maintaining that schedule could become difficult, making consistent long-term treatment impractical. An at-home device makes regular use considerably easier.

Not Every Hair Loss Laser Is the Same

Dr. Lam’s experience should not be interpreted as an endorsement of every light-based hair device available online.

He specifically chose LaserCap because he believes the quality of the technology matters. He has no affiliation with the company, but has become enthusiastic about the device based on both its underlying technology and what he observed while using it himself.

Dr. Lam cautions that some products marketed online do not provide what he considers adequate fluence or concentration. Some products described as laser treatments may not actually use true lasers at all.

Where Does LaserCap Fit Into Hair Restoration?

Dr. Lam does not believe hair restoration begins and ends with transplantation. Whenever possible, preserving and strengthening existing hair can be an important part of the strategy.

Hair loss can involve different causes and patterns, and patients should not assume that Dr. Lam’s personal three-month response predicts their own results. LaserCap may be one option within a larger treatment plan depending on what is causing the patient’s hair loss and what Dr. Lam sees during the evaluation.

His own experience, however, has given him another reason to be enthusiastic about LLLT. After intentionally testing LaserCap by itself, he saw a meaningful improvement in his own hair in a relatively short period.
