FUE Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE), or a FUE hair transplant, is a method of extracting hair from the donor area. Swelling of the forehead where hair grafts are transplanted can be similar to standard follicular-unit transplantation (FUT) using linear harvesting of the donor area and can last several days to a week following a procedure. FUE, also referred to by the abbreviations FOX, FIT and FUM, is particularly helpful for those individuals who have active lifestyles and/or wear their hair short where even a very good donor closure could still be visible to the naked eye. Until the advent of robotic technology, the problem with follicular unit excision was the high degree of variability in harvesting quality hair follicles, often leading to poor, unpredictable hair transplant results. Dr. Lam felt that almost all previous methods of FUE hair excision methods fell short of his expectations for quality. Unlike older techniques, like NEOGRAFT, hair transplants and hand harvesting for follicular unit excision, robotic technology relies on a complex algorithm and multiple sensors that lead to unparalleled precision and speed in harvesting grafts at the ideal depth, angle and direction with optimal distance between grafts. Dr. Lam offers FUE hair restoration using state-of-the-art robotic technology by Restoration Robotics called the ARTAS system. With the combined experience of Emina Karamanovski, the former National and International Training Director for Restoration Robotics, Dr. Lam offers unparalleled experience and skill with ARTAS FUE hair restoration.

ARTAS System Robotic Follicular Unit Excision [FUE] for Hair Restoration

Dr. Lam combines his talents as a leader in the field of hair restoration with Emina Karamanovski, former National and International Training Director for Restoration Robotics, the developer of the ARTAS FUE system, to offer pre-eminent technology in robotic hair transplant technology.

ARTAS FUE: Precision Robotics Hair Restoration

The ARTAS System from Restoration Robotics is a computer-assisted, FDA-cleared, robotic device that offers the most precise method for follicular unit excision (FUE) possible today. The follicular unit excision method is a method for harvesting hair from the back of the head during which individual follicular units are extracted one at a time using robotic technology. The advantages of the ARTAS system for hair restoration include

  • Precise and consistent image-guided, robot-controlled follicular unit harvesting
  • Hairstyle can be worn at any length without risk of exposing the donor scar
  • Scars are nearly undetectable after a week
  • Quick return to sports and other activities after a week
  • Reduced discomfort at donor site compared to linear harvesting

Robotic technology has come of age to change the way that medicine is practiced today. Robotics have been implemented successfully in heart valve and bypass surgeries, prostate surgery and kidney transplantation. Now computer-assisted robotic technology has arrived to change the landscape of hair restoration by offering the first consistent, reliable and precise method of Follicular Unit Excision (FUE). FUE hair transplantation has been gaining steady popularity over the last decade, especially in active men who desire shorter hairstyles.

FUE Procedure

During ARTAS robotic-controlled FUE hair transplant procedures, the patient’s hair must be trimmed down to 1 mm in length in order for the imaging technology to identify and select the targeted follicular units for excision. During the procedure, the patient rests comfortably in an ergonomically designed surgery chair, and a uniquely designed skin tensioner is applied to the patient’s scalp to stabilize the skin for accurate tracking and dissection of follicular units. Once harvested, the grafts undergo final preparation and Dr. Lam and his highly skilled, dedicated hair transplant team creates recipient sites in an artistic manner to accommodate the harvested grafts.

FUE Hair Transplant Technique

Despite the advanced state of robotic technology in the field of hair restoration, Dr. Lam believes that his artistic control over the design of a hair transplant pattern ultimately dictates the naturalness, visual density and aesthetic appearance of the hair restoration. That’s why Dr. Lam painstakingly takes the time to artistically place each graft to create exceptional aesthetic results. Always seeking to improve patient experience and outcome, Dr. Lam has been using healing and growth-promoting injections, witnessing a revolution in his hair transplant results. Combining specialized platelet rich plasma (PRP) and ACell (morselized porcine basement membrane) and injecting them into the scalp has increased the speed and percentage of hair growth. Since these injections improve the quality of hair transplant results in an exceptional way, Dr. Lam uses them in almost every hair transplant case, whether performed via robotic FUE or traditional strip harvesting.

FUE Hair Transplant Cost

Of course, follicular unit excision cost is a concern for many when trying to determine if ARTAS FUE is the right procedure for them. The good news is that ARTAS FUE costs make it an affordable method for hair restoration. FUE hair transplant costs can be relatively similar to other forms of hair restoration. The exact cost of your FUE hair transplant will be discussed during an initial consultation with Dr. Lam. During this consultation, your hair restoration needs and desires will be assessed by Dr. Lam and he will provide you with a precise cost based on a variety of factors that are unique to your case. Every patient’s FUE hair transplant cost will be different, dependent primarily on how many hair grafts are required to achieve the level of coverage and density desired by the patient. Although an exact follicular unit excision cost cannot be provided as a generalization to cover all patients, we want to be as transparent as possible about FUE hair transplant pricing so you have some idea of what to expect. In general, patients can expect FUE pricing to be just over $7 per graft, although smaller procedures may incur a slightly higher per graft cost. The costs reflect a slight surcharge related to the use of the advanced ARTAS technology and disposal costs that are incurred.

FUE Hair Transplant Recovery

Recovery using the ARTAS FUE technology is quick and easy, and patients can expect the donor area to be healed and nearly undetectable within a week. Since there is no linear scar following follicular unit excision, there is less tightness and achiness in the donor area following the procedure. However, recovery at the graft sites is identical using follicular unit excision or linear harvesting. In any event, it generally takes less than 24 hours to recover from FUE hair transplant surgery. By the day after your surgery, you should be able to resume most daily activities, although it is recommended that you hold off on strenuous activities for a week to prevent any accidental injury and reduce the risk of bleeding. You can return to work on the day following surgery, although many people choose to take a few days off following the procedure. Otherwise, you can expect to have some tiny scabbing in the transplanted area for up to a week, will have no bandages and can wash your hair on the day following surgery. You can wear a hat or cap immediately after surgery if you wish to conceal any scabs.

FUE Hair Transplant Results

The results of hair transplants using the ARTAS robotic technology will be identical to those relying on other methods of harvesting. In fact, results can even be superior to other methods of hair transplantation due to the diminished handling of hair grafts required during the initial stages of the procedure. Additionally, there is no chance of a visible scar at the back of the scalp. To view before and after photos of FUE hair transplants, view our Photo Gallery.
